    About Excelsior

Located on the southern shore of Lake Minnetonka, the City of Excelsior is a unique blend of old and new. Excelsior’s historic downtown and small-town atmosphere offer visitors and residence a unique respite from the bustle of the Twin Cities metropolitan area. The City of Excelsior is located 20 miles southwest of downtown Minneapolis in Hennepin County. Antique shops are set side-by-side with a variety of specialty shops, restaurants, and coffee shops. Couples and families come to Excelsior by foot, boat, bike, or vehicle to eat, play, shop, and gather. The city is home to many civic events throughout the year including fun charity runs, apple days, weekly markets, and parades. Excelsior is a fun, vibrant community.

    History in Excelsior

History is important in Excelsior. Excelsior was founded in 1853 by colonists from New York. It has served as the focal point of the South Lake Minnetonka area. The small downtown and historic ambiance sets Excelsior apart from other suburban communities. A bit of that history is preserved in the recently restored steamboat, "The Minnehaha," which in summer takes passengers round trip from Excelsior to Wayzata and back. There is also a restored streetcar and a museum, all preserving part of the city's history.

    Attactions

One of the true gems of Excelsior, the Port of Excelsior is located at the east end of Water Street, just 2 blocks from Hotel Excelsior–Suites on Water Street. It is the boating center of Excelsior. There is a public dock, boat and paddle board rentals, benches, and the commercial and public cruise ships to enjoy time on Lake Minnetonka.

A 13-acre lakefront park, the Excelsior Commons Park is an historic gem of the City of Excelsior. It is located adjacent to and to the left of The Port of Excelsior. Here you will find ballfields, benches, playgrounds, a beach, bath house, public restrooms, tennis courts, and large trees to relax under with a leisurely picnic. Summer concerts are held at the Bandshell in The Commons. There are two swimming beaches at The Excelsior Commons Park.

Other attractions include the Minnesota Streetcar Museum and Trolley Rides, Excelsior Lake Minnetonka Historical Society, the Excelsior Library, lots of shopping and restaurants!  You are going to love our little town!

There are a number of community events held each year in Excelsior, which are sponsored by the South Lake-Excelsior Area Chamber of Commerce.  Thousands of visitors come to Excelsior each year to attend the Art in the Park, Fourth of July festivities, Farmer's Market, Apple Day festivities, Christmas in Excelsior, and the Lake Minnetonka Klondike Dog Derby sled dog races that start right down Water Street in downtown Excelsior!

We hope you stay with us soon!
